 What's In A Book?

General Dart Topicstaechon writes "What’s In A Book?

To understand the value of a good dart book, it is perhaps best to begin by discussing pianos.

Let’s say we wanted to learn to play the piano, instead of spending our time at the local pub tossing arrows with our friends. I can’t imagine why we would want to do this, nevertheless, for the sake of this discussion, let’s pretend that we did."

How to run a Dart Tournament

General Dart Topicsbob1936 writes "Running a fun Dart Tournament can at times not be to much fun. Over the years of running Dart Tournaments, (28) I have developed a computer program for a small (32) player tournament that takes up the whole day for Dart Players.

Many of you have been to WCDO Amateur Dart Tournaments over the years, (54 Tournaments) and we run these small ones the same way. All preliminary play is Round Robin, and the Finals Tournaments are Knock-out.

In this program you set a fee for entry, and the program will figure out the payout based on the amount of sign-ups you receive. You can also subtract any production costs that you might have, such as providing dinner, trophies, and hall rental.

I have combined this program with an operating system, and the program to run it, on a Thumb Drive that will run on Windows or Linux computers.

 Fortitude; Heart; Opportunity: Darts

General Dart TopicsGeorgeSilberzah writes "Fortitude; Heart; Opportunity: Darts.

Sport offers unique opportunities for an individual to experience the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” even when the level of prowess is neophyte. From the youngest to the oldest among us that special feeling of preparing for the competition and competing provides a good and necessary addition to our lives; even at the amateur level.

Everyone who participates in any sport, no matter how serious the commitment, is limited by their abilities. Those with significant limitations need the sport to be modified in some manner in order to participate equally; most of the time. But there is a sporting endeavor which is not like that."

SEWA WORLD, Part 9: Packing to Afghanistan

General Dart Topicsthorn writes "THORN: (nervously shouting) Sir, hello, sir! Permission to ask you your name sir!

JOSEPH: (chuckling) Joseph Kasowski, people just call me ‘Ski’ though… like a ‘ski resort’. And it’s Sergeant Kasowski… I work for a living! (laughing) It’s a big inside joke in the army. You call officers ‘sir’ and they are infamous for sitting behind desks while the enlisted soldiers do the real work."

Having to Quit League Play Temporarily

General Dart Topicsbstar writes "Well, I got some bad and good news recently. It appears my temporary period of unemployment is over..that is the good news!! The bad news is that I will have to give up playing in the Monday and Wednesday night dart leagues as this is a second shift job.

I am torn here. The new job is a really good one, I will be making more money than ever before. But giving up playing in the dart leagues will be a tough pill to swallow.

My solution to this(i heard about getting the job three weeks ago) is to just enter into a really intense period of practice during my hiatus from league play and try to improve my game, finetune some mechanical issues, and become a better dart shooter despite the layoff."

Note: I struggle with this all the time since I've been traveling a lot. I don't have the time to play or practice like I used to so the quality tends to drop -- at least until the bell rings. But even then I am off the mark and find it frustrating.

 Those Dangerous Darts

General Dart Topicstaechon writes "Those Dangerous Darts

The check-in counter opened and the hundreds of people waiting in line for flight 761 to Taipei began filing through.

The girl at the counter was pleasant enough as she smiled and asked if I had any luggage to check.

I smiled and removed the small blue backpack from my shoulder. Then flopping it down on the conveyer belt, I caught the look of wonder on the clerk’s face. Inside the pack were three shirts, three pair of underwear, three pair of clean socks and two sets of darts, one for soft tip and one for steel. The bag was obviously light enough to carry onto the plane and the clerks face said so. I thought I would help her out. “I’m transporting dangerous weapons.” I offered. “My bag would never make it past airline security.”"

 Cheers

General Dart TopicsTheCommandant writes "In the back country of Penn Sate -- an area a local B&B Innkeeper friendly refers to as Pennsyltucky -- I was informed that I'd not likely find an 'English' dart board but that if I wanted to toss some darts I could try out 'American Darts' at one of the local pubs."

Note: Added some pictures for those who'd like to see the setup!

 Darter’s Limbo

General Dart Topicstaechon writes "Darter’s Limbo

Not being religious, but still praying for a dartboard to open, I sat watching a couple struggling through a game of Straight-down Cricket. She was in the lead and had everything closed but bulls. He was not far behind, needing a single 16, three 15s and bulls to close and win. The drinks on their table were nearly gone and I was sure that this was going to be the first board to open. I wanted to get in an hour or two of practice before the blind draw that was scheduled to take place at 7:30. "

 My New Years Resolution

General Dart TopicsRags writes "January 1, 2008 I was admiring the usual New Years Day activity around the neighborhood as I rolled patiently to the corner store today. People taking down the Christmas decorations, families enjoying another holiday together, and the sidewalks filled with children of all ages running around with their new toys."

I’m Not The Loser I Thought I Was

General Dart Topicstaechon writes "I love the game of darts. I play for the competition. I practice hard and I want to get better. I want to play the best in the world. I want to beat them. By these standards, I am not your average recreational player. I have a bit more time and personal involvement invested in my own progress and therefore a bit more emotional attachment to the games I play. So isn’t it reasonable that I might show a little bit of extra emotional disappointment at a loss? And wouldn’t it be even more reasonable if the game were a soft tip match in which an opponent entered as a level 10 player and then shot like a 17?"

DARTS - The Pursuit of Misery

General Dart Topicstaechon writes "Darts

The Pursuit of Misery

I’m betting that who ever it was that first said, “misery loves company,” was most likely a dart player. I’m also quite certain it was his or her opponent who responded with, “Yes, and success breeds contempt.” For you see, it is not a “love for the sport,” that binds us together, but rather, the pursuit of misery."

Note: My shoulder hurts, I'm tired, I had too much to drink, I had not enough to drink, my waitress is slow, the lights are dim, the waitress is dim, I'm dim!
